INTERVIEW – BIG EYES – KEEP YOUR EARS OPEN
We here at Cinedork.com got the chance to catch up with the up and coming band, Big Eyes and ask them a few questions. You can check out their music on Myspace at myspace.com/bigeyesband where you can also see a list of tour dates and check out when they’re playing in your area.
How did Big Eyes come into existence?
Kate: Me and CJ played in 2 other bands before, and after I decided to leave both bands, I had some new material and wanted CJ to be a part of my new band. Mark was originally on guitar early on, but things weren’t working out as a 4 piece, so Mark eventually moved to bass and now we are a 3 piece.
Being from Brooklyn and having such a huge exposure to music, are there any bands in NYC that have influenced your sound, if not what bands have had the greatest impact on you?
Kate: The 3 of us are all from NYC suburbs (I’m from Long Island and CJ and Mark are from New Jersey), and we all have different local bands that we love and have impacted our playing, but the one NYC band that sticks out and has always had a huge impact is The Ramones. We’ve all also loved The Ergs (from NJ) for years.
On your blog, you mention that you gave up trying to use Myspace as a main site, do you think other bands are doing the same and abandoning a once dominate avenue for getting your sound to the masses? What do you see as the next channel to promote yourselves?
Other bands are definitely leaving Myspace. Facebook took the “social networking” place Myspace was filling for most people, so people have forgotten about Myspace for the most part, plus their new layout is super confusing. A lot of bands are definitely using Blogspot, Facebook and Twitter for updates. It seems like a lot more bands are also making videos (tour updates, recording updates, and music videos), so Youtube is definitely a website bands continue to utilize.
You are currently touring the East Coast, what’s been your favorite venue so far/are you looking forward to playing anywhere in particular?
We played in Nashville last night at The Little Hamilton Collective and it was our first time here, so we didn’t quite know how people would respond to us. But people really seemed to like it so we had a great time playing. Orlando, Florida was also great, a lot of people already knew a lot of our songs, which was a surprise to us because we’ve never played there before. We’re playing tonight in Chattanooga (1/19) at Sluggo’s North and are super excited to play with our good friends PS Eliot once again.
What’s on the docket for Big Eyes in the near future?
We’re going to be recording our first LP almost immediately after we get home from this tour. We’re expecting to have a release date (and show!) for it at the end of May. We’ll be touring in June and in August as well.
