TV News: Leap Day William stars enter Emmys Race?
The first round of voting ballots for this year’s Emmys are due this June 28th, and any dues paying member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences can now easily submit themselves for awards consideration (in fact, even non-members can submit themselves for a lowly $200). And while many of your favorites like Alec Baldwin, Jon Hamm, and Julianna Margulies will no doubt be in the running once again, Vulture is reporting a few particularly odd names submitting themselves for awards consideration, particularly Jim Carrey and Andie MacDowell for their guest appearance on 30 Rock this season.
During the “Leap Day” episode of 30 Rock‘s sixth and latest season, various characters watch the retelling of 30 Rock’s fictional Leap Year Day hero, on the USA Network, in what is undoubtedly part of a contrived “Leap Year Marathon.” The fake film stars Jim Carrey as a man being transformed into the made-up mythical character Leap Day William, in a hilarious send-up of the family-friendly comedies that have defined much of the actor’s own career. Even making a three-line appearance is Andie Macdowell playing the overly-familiar oblivious-but-loving wife to Jim Carrey’s spastic spinning-out-of-control protagonist. It’s a fun background gag in a particularly goofy episode (and season) of the Tina Fey-driven show; however, all five short scenes make up less than a minute and a half of screen time.
30 Rock is no stranger to celebrity guest actors receiving high praise for their time on the NBC show. Although none of these actors ended up winning Outstanding Guest Actor or Actress in a Comedy Series, Alan Alda (2009), Jennifer Aniston (2009), Will Arnett (2008, ’10, ’11), Elizabeth Banks (2011), Steve Buscemi (2008), Matt Damon (2011), Edie Falco (2008), Carrie Fischer (2008), Jon Hamm (2009, ’10), Steve Martin (2009), and Rip Torn (2008) were all nominated. Both Elaine Stritch (2007) Tim Conway (2008) ended up winning the award, those two, as well as all of the aforementioned nominated guest actors, were featured prominently on the episode in which they guest starred.
It would certainly be unlikely for either of these movie stars to have a legitimate chance at an Emmy nomination this year, but considering how many actors and actresses submit themselves for nominations each year, it’s also unlikely that either Carrey or MacDowell legitimately believes they’ll be nominated. From 30 Rock alone, Will Arnett, Billy Baldwin, Elizabeth Banks, Tituss Burgess, Steve Buscemi, Margaret Cho, Will Forte, Donald Glover, Kelsey Grammer, Jon Hamm, Ken Howard, Stacy Keach, Steve Little, Patti LuPone, James Marsden, Chloe Moretz, Cynthia Nixon, Chris Parnell, Amy Poehler, Denise Richards, Susan Sarandon, Kristen Schall, Sherri Shepherd, Mary Steenburgen, Elaine Stritch, Stanley Tucci, AND Dean Winters all submitted themselves for consideration in this year’s Outstanding Guest Actor or Outstanding Guest Actress categories.
So what are do you think of Jim Carrey and Andie MacDowell’s chances at an Emmy this year? Billy Baldwin, Ken Howard, Chloe Moretz, Kristen Schall and Sherri Shepherd all put in fantastic performances in their guest episodes this year, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect at least one of those names included when the Emmy nominations are announced this July 19th, but wouldn’t it be great to see Chris Parnell finally nominated for all his stand-out appearances as Dr. Leo Spaceman? Or are you hoping for a real life version of Leap Day William?
