Review: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

How would you spend your last 3 weeks on earth? Drink, fornicate, run down Broad Street naked with a rubber glove on your head screaming; “Hi, I’m a squid”? Or go on one last adventure?

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World follows lonely insurance sales man aptly named Dodge and his pot-smoking British neighbor, Penny as they set out on personal missions during the last three weeks on earth before an asteroid comes crashing down killing everyone. Understandable, people start going bat-shit crazy. Looting, rioting, and orgies galore. Things are starting to get heated when Dodge receives a letter from the one that got away and along with Penny and a dog named Sorry they travel from New York to Somerset NJ and in return Dodge promises Penny that he will get her to England.

But what’s a traveling buddy movie without a few colorful characters along the way. Knowing that the world is going to end makes people act a little crazy. Acid tripping servers at a roadside restaurant help put the journey into perspective as they drive through New Jersey. Eventually they accomplish their goals, but not before realizing that they could of made a cute couple had the apocalypse not been neigh.

Lorene Scafaria, better known as penning Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, makes her directorial debut with this dark romantic comedy about two people who lived together in the same building for three years but never really noticed each other until they’re about to die. And how you might pine for the one you once loved but lost, but in the end, literally, THE END, it’s the one who is with you on the journey that matters.
