Sparkle Singing Competition Finds Philly Talent
The new musical Sparkle arrives in theaters August 17th, and it’s already getting a ton of buzz. Starring Jordin Sparks of American Idol fame as well as the late Whitney Houston, the film centers on a young musical prodigy named Sparkle (played by the ever-talented Jordin Sparks) who struggles to become a star just as her family begins to go through challenges of their own. Whitney Houston is Emma, Sparkle’s single mom who does everything she can to get Sparkle to achieve her musical dreams. Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks have already released their duet, “Celebrate,” from the motion picture soundtrack. Whitney Houston’s final film promises to be a bittersweet reminder of the price paid for a shot at stardom, and we hope that the film does both talented ladies justice.
In order to promote the film, Sparkle has done some star searching of their own. As if you needed any more proof that Philadelphians are just plain awesome, check out Philly girl Torrie Nicole Robinson’s acapella version of the film’s song “Something He Can Feel” (available on myspace.com/sparkle and bet.com/sparkle). Torrie was the Philadelphia winner of the SPARKLE Singing Challenge in Cheltenham Mall on Saturday, July 14th, sponsored by Sony Pictures and Myspace. Torrie received $500 cash in addition to a chance to compete for the Grand Prize of a trip to New York City, an appearance on BET’s 106 & Park, a recording session with the Punch Monkeys producer, and a Myspace home page feature. Best of luck, Torrie – make us proud!
Public national voting for the SPARKLE Singing Challenge ends on Wednesday, August 1st, and the film Sparkle, also starring Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick and Cee-Lo Green, opens in theaters everywhere on August 17th.
