DVDs: Jaws Swims Onto Blu-Ray August 14th

Ryan Smith

To me, Jaws is the perfect film. We all have that, that one movie that is just completely perfect in our eyes, that we would defend to the death its status as a classic film. That rare movie that when you watch it, you still get the same feeling of amazement you had the first time, no matter how many times you’ve seen it since.

Being the Jaws-nut that I am, I couldn’t have been happier to see the announcement earlier this year that the film would finally be released on blu-ray. Jaws has had so many anniversary editions and special releases that it seems ridiculous to think that it’s eluded a blu-ray release for this long, but somehow it’s managed to do just that.

That changes August 14th, as Universal rolls out the new blu-ray release as part of its yearlong release set and restorations of 13 classic films to celebrate the studio’s 100-year anniversary.

The restoration of Jaws is already being hailed as the most beautiful of the bunch so far, which isn’t hard to believe if you’ve been watching any of the selected clips released online as part of Universal’s promotions. I’ll admit I geeked out after finally being able to see one of the patterns on Mayor Vaughn’s jacket in the “billboard/flagrant vandalism” scene, I was so distracted I forgot to recite Hooper’s great dialogue throughout, something that inevitably happens whenever I pop in the DVD.

I’ll be picking up my copy as early as possible August 14th and I encourage any film enthusiast to do the same so they can appreciate a truly great film in the best possible way.

Special Features include: The Shark is Still Working – The Impact and Legacy of Jaws, Jaws The Restoration – An in-depth look at the restoration process, The Making of Jaws – Updated two-hour documentary on the making of the film, Jaws Archives, and many more.
