Tig Notaro Diagnosed with Cancer

Comedian and actress Tig Notaro, best known for her stand-up comedy and appearances as a cop on The Sarah Silverman Program, recently announced on her podcast that she has cancer in both breasts. The devastating news arrived at a time where Notaro’s star is on the rise. Last year she released her first stand up album “Good One,” followed it with a memorable appearance on Conan, and is in line to joinAmy Schumer’s new Comedy Central show.

On the July 31st episode of her podcast, she spoke about a recent meeting with doctors:

…about a year ago I noticed what would be a lump in my teet, and I have been just thinking of course that it’s nothing … a week or two ago I went in [to the doctor] to get my first mammogram. I’m 41, I guess I should have started last year. So I went in and got the mammogram and the results were abnormal … go in for a follow-up, and I was told the follow-up would take 30 or 45 minutes at most, and yesterday I spent the entire day in the hospital while they ran numerous tests … the doctor came in and she was clearly a highly intelligent, kind but very concerned person … and when I was going through the tests all day yesterday … part of me thought … there was a misunderstanding… based on already being hospitalized with a deadly illness and my mother dying, there was just no way they were going to come in and tell me anything but, “Ok, everything looks great!” … And the doctor came in and her tone was very scary … she said “Ok, so, we have found something in both breasts,” … after all the explanation I said, “Wait a minute, are you telling me that I possibly have cancer,” and she said, “Well, we have to get biopsies done but from what I can see with all the testing we’ve done today it is very probable that you do in both breasts, yes.”

The diagnosis was been confirmed by a representative for Notaro.

Fellow comedian Louis C.K. had a nice tweet about the comedian’s recent stand-up performance, in which she told audiences about her diagnosis, “in 27 years of doing this, I’ve only seen a handful of truly great, masterful stand up sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo.” Notaro’s stand up has been steadily gaining popularity over the past year and is sure to continue rising. Notaro’s comedy features mostly dry wit and a warm approachable take on the absurd that audiences find hilariously endearing.

One of the most deadpan comedians since Steven Wright, Tig Notaro’s comedy is simple, slow, occasionally predictable, but consistently funny. She is also hosts of podcast Professor Blastoff with Kyle Dunnigan and David Hunstberger.

We at Cinedork and the Pretentious Film Majors wish all the best for Tig Notaro and look forward to hearing more hilarious material in the future.
