New Green Goblin is Chris Cooper for Amazing Spider sequel
The new Spider-Man franchise is set to tread familiar territory, bringing back characters like Mary Jane Watson and the Green Goblin in its upcoming sequel. It’s already been revealed that Mary Jane Watson will be played by Shailene Woodley, opposite Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, but joining the cast now is Chris Cooper as the villain Norman Osborn (aka The Green Goblin).
Chris Cooper has been keeping himself busy, doing multiple projects every year, but is probably best known for his role in American Beauty (1999) and his appearance on The Muppets (2011). Taking the role of Osborn will be his first super villain, as well as his first CGI representation on screen. That is unless Norman Osborn doesn’t even go through his mutation in the upcoming film.
Though it was a little brushed over in the 2002 film, Osborn was quite the mentor to Peter Parker. With the inclusion of Electro and Rhino already in the works as villains in the sequel, there just might be room for Osborn’s mentor story to add twice the heartbreak when he does become evil at some other point. Also, if there is a stall in the actual appearance of the Green Goblin, there could also be more room to see the dynamic between Peter Parker, Norman Osborn, as well as his son Harry.
About ten years ago audiences had Tobey Maguire, and now they have Andrew Garfield. Is director Marc Webb trying to replace the former franchise? With such a success in the first installment it is quite possible, so let’s hope there is no steam lost this time around. And, let’s not forget, that since Webb & Garfield’s Spider-Man isn’t under Disney’s jurisdiction, Marc Webb could be calling “dibs” on Marvel villains, not that there is any shortage of evil to go around.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release in 2014.
